5 Reasons Why Volunteering Is Not for You

Volunteering is definitely a noble activity. No wonder so many young people decide to start doing this to help others. However, volunteering is not for everyone. This work can easily put too much pressure on a person and leave this person completely exhausted.

If you don’t know whether volunteering is a good option for you or not, here’s some tips that can help you make your decision.

Volunteering is not for you if:

1. You don’t have enough energy.

If you are a person with a kind heart, willing to help almost everyone, that’s great. However, you should remember that volunteering requires a lot of energy. If you are having a tough period in your life, if you get tired easily these days or have too many friends who require your help and moral support, maybe volunteering will exhaust you even more. Remember that one should start volunteering only if has enough energy to do so.

2. You don’t have enough free time.

You think that you’ll be able to fit this kind of work into your busy routine somehow, but most likely you won’t. Remember that this is a time consuming activity. If you are much occupied with work, family, friends and other things, maybe you should choose donating to charity instead. Otherwise, you may find yourself stressed and unable to fit everything into your busy routine.

3. You don’t have necessary skills.

Sometimes people are so willing to start volunteering that totally forget that this activity requires certain skills. You won’t be able to take care of homeless animals if you are allergic to fur and you won’t be able to help victims of a certain incident if you are physically weak or afraid of blood.

There are actually so many ways to help people starting from saving lives and ending with baking charity cookies and you are always able to choose the type of work you are definitely fit to do.

4. You feel like your safety is at risk.

Some courageous people are able to go very far and to do different amazing things while doing their volunteer work. However, they realize the risk they’re taking and are probably prepared well both mentally and physically. If you try volunteering and realize that your coordinators ask you to do something that you consider unsafe, feel free to decline this kind of work. After all, your safety is a priority.

5. You aren’t really committed to it.

Some people are asked to help with volunteering work or are even bullied into it. This is definitely not a good way to start volunteering. You have to like this work, have to be willing to help people, not do so because you’ve asked to. Volunteering is not that kind of work that can be done half-heartedly.

Remember: if you actually aren’t sure that you can handle volunteering, it’s okay. There are other ways to help people: for example, by donating money or things, by providing services, etc. Sooner or later you’ll find a way that suits you the best.
